Committees

Bertram A. Horowitz, F.C.A.S and M.A.A.A., continues to maintain an active role in the establishment and maintenance of actuarial principles and standards. BHI maintains a national reputation within the insurance community as a property/casualty loss reserve expert and a qualified loss reserve specialist.
  

Current Committees 

  • Casualty Committee of the American Academy of Actuaries (“AAA”) which was engaged in the promulgation of the June, 2007 Actuarial Standard of Practice No. 43 “Property/Casualty Unpaid Claim Estimates”. 

Prior Committees and Panels 

  • Chair of the Task Force on Reserving Principles which considered updating the 1988 “Statement of Principles Regarding Property/Casualty Loss and Loss Adjustment Expense Reserves”.  The Committee on Reserves reviews call papers on reserving topics to be presented at the call paper program during the annual Casualty Loss Reserve Seminar. 

  • Committee on Reserves which promulgated the May, 1988 "Statement of Principles Regarding Property and Casualty Loss and Loss Adjustment Expense Reserves". 
  • Liaison between the Committee on Reserves Task Force on Principles and the Reserving Subcommittee of the Actuarial Standards Board as well as the Committee on Principles.  
  • Member of the Reserving Subcommittee of the Casualty Committee of the Actuarial Standards Board of the American Academy of Actuaries (“AAA”) which promulgated Actuarial Standard of Practice No. 36 “Statements of Actuarial Opinion Regarding Property/Casualty Loss and Loss Adjustment Expense Reserves” during his tenure. During Mr. Horowitz’s tenure, the subcommittee also prepared the Actuarial Standards of Practice “Documentation and Disclosure in Property and Casualty Insurance Ratemaking, Loss Reserving, and Valuations” and “Discounting of Property and Casualty Loss and Loss Adjustment Expense Reserves”.  
  • Financial Analysis Committee of the CAS.  
  • Loss Reserve Seminar Committee jointly sponsored by the CAS and AAA.  
  • Served on several panels of the Loss Reserve Seminar where he delivered lectures on various loss reserving topics.  

  • Moderator several panels of the Casualty Loss Reserve Seminar where reserving call papers were presented. 
  • NAIC Blanks Subcommittee which considers the form in which insurers report their results.
